The Value of Comics

I’ve been thinking about what makes a comic book valuable.

Aside from holding it for something like 30-50 years, there are other characteristics that make a comic book hold its value. A main characteristic is if it is the introduction of someone who becomes a major player in the world of comics. For example, the first appearance of Batman was in issue #27 of Detective Comics and if you can find a mint condition issue of that comic, it has been valued at $300,000! Do you realize you can buy a house with that one comic?

I already mentioned a second characteristic – keeping the comic book in mint condition. This is really important, although even if only in good condition, a comic book of this sort can yield 1000% appreciation.

Thirdly, holding a mint comic book with a primary character’s first appearance for a couple of decades is a surefire way of making sure you get a great return on your investment.

Next time you come into Comic Zone, ask us about some of our “special” issues. Good chance that you can get a real gem at a good price now, hold it until you are ready to retire, and your golden years can be spent in style. :)

Why Gift Certificates?

Honestly, there isn’t anything better than getting your favorite comic book fan a gift certificate for the holidays or for a birthday or any special occasion. Why, you may ask? There are several good reasons for gift certificates.

1. You may not know precisely what they like as there are many issues of many different comics

2. You may not know exactly what they have as there are many issues of many different comics

3. A gift certificate is easy to wrap

4. They can use the gift certificate at their leisure, so if they are waiting for a certain issue that isn’t coming out for awhile, they can use it in the future.

5. They can use it in our online store and never leave their home

6. They can use it to get gifts for other people

7. They can use it to buy a graphic novel which entitles them to our preferred customer punch cards which awards future discounts

8. They can use it to buy a Comic Zone t-shirt which would give them a 10% discount on any purchase made while they are wearing the shirt

9. You can just come in and buy a gift certificate quickly when you are in a hurry

10. And finally, you can buy one for yourself when you want to treat yourself as a reward for some success or accomplishment in your life.

You’ll be happy to hear that Comic Zone sells gift certificates in any denomination you may want. They are available year round.

And if you are still looking for last minute gifts, we are open tonight until 8 pm and on Christmas Eve until 5 pm.

Re-Cast: The Next Generation

Now that this summer’s surprisingly-amazing Star Trek is on DVD, a friend and I were thinking of whom we could cast in a re-make of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Here’s what I came up with:

Liam Neeson as Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

tng_liamneeson tng_picard

While the idea to keep Patrick Stewart on board as Captain Picard was very tempting, that wouldn’t be much of a re-cast. However, Neeson has proven that he can both be a thoughtful, intelligent character (R’as Al Ghul, Batman Begins), as well as a certifiable badass (Bryan Mills, Taken), two traits necessary for the Captain of the USS NCC-1701D.

Ewan McGregor as Commander William Riker

tng_ewanmcgregor tng_riker

Not to over-cast a bunch of Jedi as Star Trek: TNG characters, but who better to play Picard’s “Number One” than Obi-Wan Kenobi? McGregor is a contemplative, sexy man who’s ready for action at the drop of a hat, just like Will Riker. But I mostly just cast him for his beard. Hot-dang, is that thing amazing!

Kel Mitchell as Lt. Commander Geordi LaForge

tng_kelmitchell tng_geordie

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the orange soda-loving Kel doing anything high-profile in Hollywood. What better chance to re-invent himself than as no-nonsense, Warp Drive engineer Geordi LaForge? This would keep the film light-hearted, as well as re-define Kel as a serious actor.

Elizabeth Shannon as Counselor Deanna Troi

tng_shannonelizabeth tng_troi

Again, it’s been a while since we’ve seen Elizabeth Shannon in anything. She resembles Marina Sirtis enough to easily fill the Betazoid’s purple bodysuit, and her role as Nadia in American Pie proves that she has no problem doing foreign accents. Plus, every Hollywood film needs a little eye candy, these days.

John Cusack as Lt. Commander Data

tng_cusak tng_data

Cusack may only have a passing resemblance to Brent Spiner, but the fact that he still looks like he did when he was 21 gets him this role; If Data is an android, he should always look like he’s fresh off the assembly line…something even Spiner couldn’t accomplish. Presuming there will be sequels, Cusack is perfect.

Samuel L. Jackson as Lt. Commander Worf

tng_samjackson tng_worf

Worf is a frustrated, angry-sounding, tough-as-nails, honorable Klingon. Sam Jackson plays that role in pretty much every movie he’s made since Pulp Fiction. Plus, Jackson’s got major geek cred, and this role would only help cement that. Seems like a good fit to me!

Alyson Hannigan as Dr. Beverly Crusher

tng_alysonhannigan tng_beverlycrusher

Hannigan has the adorable girl-next-door look that Gates McFadden retained, and her role as Willow Rosenberg on TV’s Buffy proved that she can play as intelligent a role as necessary, although she’s admittedly maybe not quite old enough. It’s a shame that Nikki Cox got all that plastic surgery and now looks like a mutant fish, because it leaves the number of redheads in Hollywood pretty slim… And Lindsay Lohan is right out.

Elisha Cuthbert as Tasha Yar
tng_cuthbert tng_yar

She’s gonna die in the first action scene, anyways, so let’s just throw in a currently-popular blonde to play Tasha Yar. Why the heck not? It’ll attract the teenage male demographic that was on the fence about the movie.

Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan
tng_whoopi tng_guinan

Yeah, okay. This one is cheating a bit. But Guinan is supposed to be hundreds of years old, right? So if she ages just a little bit, who cares? Besides, who else has the right look for the Enterprise’s bartender? Certainly not the modern-day, rail-thin, AfrAm actresses like Beyoncé. And it’ll only be a cameo appearance that’ll get the theatre crowds to applaud. Nothing wrong with that.

So what do you think? Agree with my re-casting for TNG? No? Why not? Who would you get, instead?

WWE Heroes coming March 2010

WWE Comics can reveal the line-up of wrestlers set to appear in WWE Heroes, launching March 2010. The flagship series will feature worldwide stars Triple H, Undertaker, Randy Orton, Batista, Shawn Michaels, Big Show, John Cena, CM Punk, Kane, Edge, Chris Jericho, Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Carlito, Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler, Kelly Kelly, and WWE owner Vince McMahon.

WWE Heroes #1 from Titan Comics

Really? Okay, I’ll bite.

As a long-time WWE fan (I’ve been watching since 1993), I’ve seen many attempts at wrestling-based comics come and go… Mostly badly. Chaos! Comics’ series based on The Undertaker started off well, working under the premise that The Undertaker was actually a Lord of Hell, working undercover in the then-WWF (”World Wrestling Federation”) as a wrestler in order to send some escaped demons back to the underworld. His long-time associate Paul Bearer was also a demon, and Undertaker’s half-brother, Kane, was working for Bearer. Mick Foley’s former persona, Mankind, made appearances as the only mortal who could see everybody for what they really were; However, since he talked to the sock he wore on his hand, everybody assumed he was insane. Overall, it was a fairly promising setup… Except, about halfway through the series’ publication, Undertaker stopped portraying his “Lord of Darkness” persona and began dressing in biker clothes as the “American Badass” version of The Undertaker… completely negating the entire premise behind the comic. Chaos! also did comics based on Stone Cold Steve Austin and Chyna, though I never read either of those series.

A couple of years earlier, former WWF Superstar The Ultimate Warrior attempted to produce a comic of his own. Ultimate Creations was housed right here in Scottsdale… unfortunately. The Warrior comic had nigh naught in inter-character dialogue exchanges, but a veritable metric ton of verbose, loquacious exposition. And it all sounded like the previous sentence. At least the art was pretty.

Marvel attempted to release a WCW comic in the early 90s (we actually had a couple of issues in stock for a while, before a local wrestling fanatic bought them up). The less said about those, the better. In addition, there were several WWE comics from the late 80s and early 90s that attempted to further promote each wrestlers’ persona.

The problem with doing comics like that today, however, is that wrestlers are always switching sides. Earlier this year, WWE Superstar CM Punk was a beloved fan-favorite heroic-type character. And why wouldn’t he be? His entrance music is performed by popular Metalcore band Killswitch Engage. He is, both on- and off-camera, a straight-edge indivdual (which mean he doesn’t drink, smoke, or do drugs). A perfect role model for the kiddies. But, in the middle of the summer, as he began to have a series of matches with the more popular fan favorite Jeff Hardy, the audience began to turn on CM Punk, and he responded in kind, effectively becoming a villain character.

Similarly, Dave Batista was one of the WWE’s top good guy stars (called “Babyfaces” in wrestling jargon), but his recent greed for championship gold has turned him against his long-time friend, Rey Mysterio. Similarly, long-time villain, Shelton Benjamin (who cockily refers to himself as “The Gold Standard”) has become a good guy, again, with almost no warning.

How, then, can you keep a monthly comic book series up-to-date with the weekly changes in WWE programming? Considering it takes at least two months to draw, ink, color, and print a comic, everything is always going to be at least eight or nine weeks (or two Pay-Per-View events) behind.

But, okay, let’s take a look at what we’ve actually got. The promotional bit at the top of this article states that we’ll see “Triple H (currently heroic), Undertaker (heroic, despite demonic undertones), Randy Orton (villain), Batista (villain), Shawn Michaels (Christ-fearing hero), Big Show (always flip-flopping), John Cena (annoyingly heroic), CM Punk (see above), Kane (always flip-flopping), Edge (long-time villain who is currently injured with a torn achilles tendon), Chris Jericho (villain), Matt Hardy (temporarily heroic), Jeff Hardy (NOT EVEN IN THE COMPANY ANYMORE!), Rowdy Roddy Piper (RETIRED!), Carlito (hasn’t regularly been on TV in months), Jim Ross (…commentator?), Jerry Lawler (retired wrestler-turned announcer), Kelly Kelly (eye candy who I suppose you could call heroic), and WWE owner Vince McMahon.” For a series called “WWE Heroes,” there sure are a lot of non-heroic characters advertised as being present.

And the cover features Triple H (short for “Hunter Hearst-Helmsley”) in the center, with none of the logos present on his tights; The Undertaker, with neither of his arms covered in his trademark tattoos; and John Cena (in the hat), fighting zombies and cat-people. Um, okay?

John Cena is in a hat and denim shorts with no shirt on, fighting zombies. Hell, Triple H  is fighting zombies in his underpants! And The Undertaker is supposedly already dead. Shouldn’t he be on the zombies’ side?

Don’t we have enough zombie comics? And since when do Undertaker, Triple H, and John Cena all have the exact same physique? (Hint: they don’t)

I’ll give UK publisher Titan comics credit for attempting to branch out and try something different… but I’m not sure about this one. We’ll carry a few copies, so people can check it out. But I dunno.

Then again, I thought the idea of multi-colored Lanterns was kind of silly, and Blackest Night is selling like gangbusters! So, clearly, I’m sometimes wrong.

WWE gets new Mattel figures on January 01, 2010, and a comic series from Titan on March 23, 2010. It’ll be an interesting decade, that’s for sure.

Success

Well, we have joined the ranks of new businesses considered successful in that we are not among the 50% of businesses who fail in the first year. To what do we attribute this success?

The first quality that has really helped us is perseverance. We have continued through the ups and downs. We have persisted, insisted on making this work. More than once we have been down to our last $1000 and wondered how we would continue. A few times we were rescued by our private financing source. A few times one or another of us made a small member contribution so we could continue. All four of us made great sacrifices in time and money to keep the store going.

The second quality that has made a huge difference is our ability to take a step back, assess where we are at, and not be afraid of changing things up. If something wasn’t working, we tried something else. We found out that, for our business, costly display ads in popular periodicals do not pay off for us! I think we got one or two customers from our display ads. We found out that having remotes from radio stations frequented by our target audience works like a charm. Two hours, for a fraction of what a display ad costs, would more than pay for itself that day, and we’d continue to realize positive repercussions for the next week or more. We found that simple flyers and word of mouth were very effective marketing tools, and right now, we are exploring a solid marketing presence in social media. Every step is a learning experience and we keep what works, and let go of what doesn’t.

The third quality that serves us well is knowing when to say no. We learned very quickly not to order too much from our distributor. We learned that sometimes it’s better to run out of an issue than to stock too much. We learned that people want to sell us their comics, and hope to make a fortune doing so…. we usually tell them if they want to make a fortune, they need to do the work and sell their prizes individually. We really don’t have time to do that, nor can we pay what they are hoping to get. But sometimes, people just want to help us out, as they de-clutter their garage or what-not. We have learned that even at a very reasonable price, we need to be discerning. We really don’t need a bunch of comics that aren’t in demand.

Most important of all, however, is our dedication to our customers. We bend over backwards to please our customers. We have a solid and healthy pull-box membership. We have regular sales for our preferred customers. We will go out of our way to help our customers find something that they want. We love and appreciate our customers, and always give a little more than what they expect. Our customers are our life blood, and we want them to know that we appreciate them!

We had a huge celebration on Saturday – one year after our preview party on Dec. 5th, 2008. It was a great day. We had cake. We had balloons. We had coffee. We had comic book artists and writers from 12:30 to 7:30 pm. We had bellydancers for two hours. We had sales throughout the day. We sold t-shirts with our store logo on them, which grants the wearer a 10% discount on any order. We gave away our new loyal customer punch cards which entitle a customer to a free trade paperback after purchasing 20. Everyone had a blast.

And that’s another important quality. We appreciate our customers and we celebrate our successes. Comic Zone – the best comic book store in Scottsdale, AZ.
