Spider-Man Reboot: Is this really a bad thing?

So, let me preface this by saying that I enjoyed all three Spider-Man films by Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, and company. The first movie proved that you don’t need to completely redesign a superhero’s costume for the big screen, and that sticking to the source material really isn’t a bad idea. Spider-Man 2 proved that you can tell an interesting movie with a relatively uninteresting villain. Spider-Man 3 proved that there really can be too much of a good thing.

Do I want more Spider-Man movies? Absolutely. Do I want more Spider-Man movies by Sam Raimi and friends? Meh, not particularly.

I think the Raimi Trilogy was absolutely wonderful. The whole series tells a great story involving Peter, MJ, and Harry, their interactions with each other, and all three movies really hammer home the “With great power comes great responsibility” theme, especially with the villains. But, basically, they did the three biggest Spider-Man villains, and anybody that they do from here isn’t really enough to fill a full movie – Can The Rhino really carry a 90-120 minute film, all by himself? Hardly. Nor could Electro, the Lizard, or the Vulture.

Possibly to rectify this situation, reportedly, Sony pictures wanted to make a film with two villains. Raimi refused, citing that the reception to the third movie wasn’t as positive to the first two (despite the more profitable opening weekend); Without fail, the comic movies that focus on just one villain (or, in the case of X-Men, one major villain with some assorted henchmen) are always of better quality than the ones that have two. The Dark Knight is the best of all the Batman movies, and I would argue that Batman ‘89 comes in second, even above Batman Begins. And that’s not because The Joker is in both movies, but because each one only has a single villain (because, while Two-Face is present in TDK, he’s not really a proper villain, as much as a pawn in Joker’s plans), which is easier to follow than Batman Returns (which had Penguin and Catwoman), or Batman Forever (Riddler and Two-Face), or Batman & Robin (Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy). Hell, Batman Begins had two R’as Al Ghuls AND The Scarecrow! Far too complex.

So, in the wake of Raimi bailing on the project, due to these creative differences, Sony has announced a reboot to the franchise, focusing on Spider-Man’s time in high school, and it’s to be directed by (500) Days of Summer’s Marc Webb. I haven’t seen (500) Days of Summer, but I have heard naught but positive reviews for the film.

Is a full-on reboot necessary? I don’t necessarily think so. However, I do think that the story that Raimi & company were telling has run its course, and it’s time for something else. I don’t think I really want to see more of Tobey Maguire (now 35) and Kirsten Dunst (who will be 28 this year) angsting over each other anymore. We’ve had three movies of that story; Let’s move on to something else.

I think the best direction for Spider-Man is to find a new cast and to start telling random adventures of the webhead and his friends. And we could get more into Parker’s personal life. Let’s see some stories about Peter trying to date Betty Brant. That, combined with Mysterio could fill up an entire movie. Pete trying to get involved with Felicia Hardy while Spidey gets involved with The Black Cat while they take on somebody like The Kraven the Hunter could have interesting possibilities.

But, I think that Sony distancing themselves from the Raimi trilogy and moving on to something else is a good idea. It’ll breathe a breath of fresh air into the franchise. And, besides – I’d rather have SOME Spider-Man movie on the horizon than none at all.

GREG CAPULLO to take over art on HAUNT

Comic Book Resources (http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=24445) announced yesterday that Ryan Ottley is stepping down from the pencils on HAUNT, the new title written by Todd McFarlane and Robert Kirkman, and he will be replaced by Greg Capüllo. Ottley cites the pressure of pencilling two monthly titles as being too much work for him; I can’t blame him. Trying to do your best work while dividing your mind between two completely separate styles of storytelling could easily drive somebody to insanity!

As it was, HAUNT’s creative team was rather unusual – Kirkman and McFarlane wrote the book, Greg Capüllo (SPAWN, CREECH) did layouts, Ottley did pencils, and McFarlane was on digital inks. McFarlane is no stranger to inking other peoples’ work – He inked his own stuff for a long time, spent years inking Capüllo’s work on SPAWN, and, recently has been doing digital inks over Whilce Portacio’s pencils on SPAWN. But, Ottley’s best known for his work on INVINCIBLE (another Kirkman title from Image), and so HAUNT looked nothing like the artwork from either Ottley, Capüllo, or McFarlane. It was too dark to fit Ottley’s general cheery, cartoony style, and too cartoony and cheery to fit the usual work of Capüllo and McFarlane.

So, taking Ottley out of the equation, in fact, may be what the book needs to really stand out and look more like what its cover advertises. I know that the clash of art styles is what kept me away from the book. Capüllo takes over with issue 6, to be released in March, allowing the first arc to be completed by Ottley.

Maybe now’s a good time to look into the series. I’ve always been a fan of Capüllo’s work, especially when he’s drawing for Todd. I’ll give the first arc a try and let you know how it goes, Zoners.

$1.00 comics from Marvel

Marvel have just announced a line of new comics that will be priced at just $1.00 to try and expand sales of current comics to new readers.

Official Press Release

Start Here With The Next Wave of Marvel’s Greatest Comics For Only $1.00!

Marvel is proud to announce the next wave of Marvel’s Greatest Comics imprint, spotlighting Marvel’s most-acclaimed series with new printings for only $1.00! Providing the perfect jumping-on point for new readers and a great low cost first chapter to some of the hottest selling Marvel Collected editions for retailers, Marvel’s Greatest Comics heats up in April with the following titles:

April 7: WOLVERINE #66
April 14: HULK #1
April 21: NEW AVENGERS #1
April 28: CIVIL WAR #1

“With the increased mainstream attention on comics and the new readers entering stores, Marvel wants to make sure everyone gets a chance to read our best titles,” said David Gabriel, Marvel Senior Vice-President of Sales & Circulation. “Marvel’s Greatest Comics allows fans to discover new series at a low price while also providing retailers with product they can stock on their shelves for years.”

Stay tuned for more details on Marvel’s Greatest Comics at www.marvel.com!

Not a bad idea. So, the issues we’re offered are the first part of WOLVERINE: OLD MAN LOGAN (WOLVERINE #66), the first issue of Jeph Loeb’s current HULK run, NEW AVENGERS #1, and CIVIL WAR #1. Those are all pretty popular books, which would give new readers something to talk about with people who’re already reading those titles.

I’ve noticed that since DC’s Vertigo imprint started doing $1.00 number 1 issues, sales on Vertigo books have gone up, overall. Giving readers a taste of what the book is about for a buck isn’t a bad idea, and certainly entices people to take a risk. After all, a dollar for the first issue stings a lot less than $3.99.

Here’s hoping that Marvel and DC both start offering more #1 issues at a lower price point to get readers hooked on a series.

What a first week!

Well, if you want to start the new year right, Marvel and DC certainly delivered in 2010.

BLACKEST NIGHT #6 dealt with the end of issue #5 in a fun, imaginative way, and the cliffhanger ending is absolutely fantastic – And it leaves me wondering how the events of this issue will affect the outcome of FLASH REBIRTH. Way to upsell me, DC! Will Barry Allen continue down the path of this issue, or will his change only be for the referenced 24 hours?

Meanwhile, on the Marvel side of things, SIEGE starts up this week. A four-issue event crossover is a lot easier to swallow than the 7 or 8 issues we’ve gotten the last few years, and we’re able to get right to the point. And the wonderful Bendis banter that I would’ve loved to see IN the issue is added to the back – I especially liked Bullseye/Hawkeye’s deal about how just the one God, Ares, was able to get him to shut up, and Asgard is a whole city of Gods. Absolutely brilliant.

I’m excited to see where both of these events go. The conclusions for both stories can’t get here soon enough! Good thing April is only a few months away!

Sadly, between WAR OF THE SUPERMEN, THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE, and X-Men’s SECOND COMING, nothing in 2010 looks quite as exciting as what’s going on right now. Hopefully Marvel and DC can change my mind as the year progresses!

And if you’re not checking out IMAGE UNITED, what’re you waiting for? The Image Universe is finally becoming cohesive! Spawn, the Savage Dragon, Youngblood, Cyberforce, Witchblade, Shadowhawk, Invincible, and more are all finally sharing a world, and everybody is being drawn by their respective creators, so you’re guaranteed the “proper” versions of everybody. IMAGE UNITED is a total blast. Get up in that.

Peace.

Re-Cast: The Next Generation

Now that this summer’s surprisingly-amazing Star Trek is on DVD, a friend and I were thinking of whom we could cast in a re-make of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Here’s what I came up with:

Liam Neeson as Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

tng_liamneeson tng_picard

While the idea to keep Patrick Stewart on board as Captain Picard was very tempting, that wouldn’t be much of a re-cast. However, Neeson has proven that he can both be a thoughtful, intelligent character (R’as Al Ghul, Batman Begins), as well as a certifiable badass (Bryan Mills, Taken), two traits necessary for the Captain of the USS NCC-1701D.

Ewan McGregor as Commander William Riker

tng_ewanmcgregor tng_riker

Not to over-cast a bunch of Jedi as Star Trek: TNG characters, but who better to play Picard’s “Number One” than Obi-Wan Kenobi? McGregor is a contemplative, sexy man who’s ready for action at the drop of a hat, just like Will Riker. But I mostly just cast him for his beard. Hot-dang, is that thing amazing!

Kel Mitchell as Lt. Commander Geordi LaForge

tng_kelmitchell tng_geordie

It’s been a while since we’ve seen the orange soda-loving Kel doing anything high-profile in Hollywood. What better chance to re-invent himself than as no-nonsense, Warp Drive engineer Geordi LaForge? This would keep the film light-hearted, as well as re-define Kel as a serious actor.

Elizabeth Shannon as Counselor Deanna Troi

tng_shannonelizabeth tng_troi

Again, it’s been a while since we’ve seen Elizabeth Shannon in anything. She resembles Marina Sirtis enough to easily fill the Betazoid’s purple bodysuit, and her role as Nadia in American Pie proves that she has no problem doing foreign accents. Plus, every Hollywood film needs a little eye candy, these days.

John Cusack as Lt. Commander Data

tng_cusak tng_data

Cusack may only have a passing resemblance to Brent Spiner, but the fact that he still looks like he did when he was 21 gets him this role; If Data is an android, he should always look like he’s fresh off the assembly line…something even Spiner couldn’t accomplish. Presuming there will be sequels, Cusack is perfect.

Samuel L. Jackson as Lt. Commander Worf

tng_samjackson tng_worf

Worf is a frustrated, angry-sounding, tough-as-nails, honorable Klingon. Sam Jackson plays that role in pretty much every movie he’s made since Pulp Fiction. Plus, Jackson’s got major geek cred, and this role would only help cement that. Seems like a good fit to me!

Alyson Hannigan as Dr. Beverly Crusher

tng_alysonhannigan tng_beverlycrusher

Hannigan has the adorable girl-next-door look that Gates McFadden retained, and her role as Willow Rosenberg on TV’s Buffy proved that she can play as intelligent a role as necessary, although she’s admittedly maybe not quite old enough. It’s a shame that Nikki Cox got all that plastic surgery and now looks like a mutant fish, because it leaves the number of redheads in Hollywood pretty slim… And Lindsay Lohan is right out.

Elisha Cuthbert as Tasha Yar
tng_cuthbert tng_yar

She’s gonna die in the first action scene, anyways, so let’s just throw in a currently-popular blonde to play Tasha Yar. Why the heck not? It’ll attract the teenage male demographic that was on the fence about the movie.

Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan
tng_whoopi tng_guinan

Yeah, okay. This one is cheating a bit. But Guinan is supposed to be hundreds of years old, right? So if she ages just a little bit, who cares? Besides, who else has the right look for the Enterprise’s bartender? Certainly not the modern-day, rail-thin, AfrAm actresses like Beyoncé. And it’ll only be a cameo appearance that’ll get the theatre crowds to applaud. Nothing wrong with that.

So what do you think? Agree with my re-casting for TNG? No? Why not? Who would you get, instead?

WWE Heroes coming March 2010

WWE Comics can reveal the line-up of wrestlers set to appear in WWE Heroes, launching March 2010. The flagship series will feature worldwide stars Triple H, Undertaker, Randy Orton, Batista, Shawn Michaels, Big Show, John Cena, CM Punk, Kane, Edge, Chris Jericho, Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Carlito, Jim Ross, Jerry Lawler, Kelly Kelly, and WWE owner Vince McMahon.

WWE Heroes #1 from Titan Comics

Really? Okay, I’ll bite.

As a long-time WWE fan (I’ve been watching since 1993), I’ve seen many attempts at wrestling-based comics come and go… Mostly badly. Chaos! Comics’ series based on The Undertaker started off well, working under the premise that The Undertaker was actually a Lord of Hell, working undercover in the then-WWF (”World Wrestling Federation”) as a wrestler in order to send some escaped demons back to the underworld. His long-time associate Paul Bearer was also a demon, and Undertaker’s half-brother, Kane, was working for Bearer. Mick Foley’s former persona, Mankind, made appearances as the only mortal who could see everybody for what they really were; However, since he talked to the sock he wore on his hand, everybody assumed he was insane. Overall, it was a fairly promising setup… Except, about halfway through the series’ publication, Undertaker stopped portraying his “Lord of Darkness” persona and began dressing in biker clothes as the “American Badass” version of The Undertaker… completely negating the entire premise behind the comic. Chaos! also did comics based on Stone Cold Steve Austin and Chyna, though I never read either of those series.

A couple of years earlier, former WWF Superstar The Ultimate Warrior attempted to produce a comic of his own. Ultimate Creations was housed right here in Scottsdale… unfortunately. The Warrior comic had nigh naught in inter-character dialogue exchanges, but a veritable metric ton of verbose, loquacious exposition. And it all sounded like the previous sentence. At least the art was pretty.

Marvel attempted to release a WCW comic in the early 90s (we actually had a couple of issues in stock for a while, before a local wrestling fanatic bought them up). The less said about those, the better. In addition, there were several WWE comics from the late 80s and early 90s that attempted to further promote each wrestlers’ persona.

The problem with doing comics like that today, however, is that wrestlers are always switching sides. Earlier this year, WWE Superstar CM Punk was a beloved fan-favorite heroic-type character. And why wouldn’t he be? His entrance music is performed by popular Metalcore band Killswitch Engage. He is, both on- and off-camera, a straight-edge indivdual (which mean he doesn’t drink, smoke, or do drugs). A perfect role model for the kiddies. But, in the middle of the summer, as he began to have a series of matches with the more popular fan favorite Jeff Hardy, the audience began to turn on CM Punk, and he responded in kind, effectively becoming a villain character.

Similarly, Dave Batista was one of the WWE’s top good guy stars (called “Babyfaces” in wrestling jargon), but his recent greed for championship gold has turned him against his long-time friend, Rey Mysterio. Similarly, long-time villain, Shelton Benjamin (who cockily refers to himself as “The Gold Standard”) has become a good guy, again, with almost no warning.

How, then, can you keep a monthly comic book series up-to-date with the weekly changes in WWE programming? Considering it takes at least two months to draw, ink, color, and print a comic, everything is always going to be at least eight or nine weeks (or two Pay-Per-View events) behind.

But, okay, let’s take a look at what we’ve actually got. The promotional bit at the top of this article states that we’ll see “Triple H (currently heroic), Undertaker (heroic, despite demonic undertones), Randy Orton (villain), Batista (villain), Shawn Michaels (Christ-fearing hero), Big Show (always flip-flopping), John Cena (annoyingly heroic), CM Punk (see above), Kane (always flip-flopping), Edge (long-time villain who is currently injured with a torn achilles tendon), Chris Jericho (villain), Matt Hardy (temporarily heroic), Jeff Hardy (NOT EVEN IN THE COMPANY ANYMORE!), Rowdy Roddy Piper (RETIRED!), Carlito (hasn’t regularly been on TV in months), Jim Ross (…commentator?), Jerry Lawler (retired wrestler-turned announcer), Kelly Kelly (eye candy who I suppose you could call heroic), and WWE owner Vince McMahon.” For a series called “WWE Heroes,” there sure are a lot of non-heroic characters advertised as being present.

And the cover features Triple H (short for “Hunter Hearst-Helmsley”) in the center, with none of the logos present on his tights; The Undertaker, with neither of his arms covered in his trademark tattoos; and John Cena (in the hat), fighting zombies and cat-people. Um, okay?

John Cena is in a hat and denim shorts with no shirt on, fighting zombies. Hell, Triple H  is fighting zombies in his underpants! And The Undertaker is supposedly already dead. Shouldn’t he be on the zombies’ side?

Don’t we have enough zombie comics? And since when do Undertaker, Triple H, and John Cena all have the exact same physique? (Hint: they don’t)

I’ll give UK publisher Titan comics credit for attempting to branch out and try something different… but I’m not sure about this one. We’ll carry a few copies, so people can check it out. But I dunno.

Then again, I thought the idea of multi-colored Lanterns was kind of silly, and Blackest Night is selling like gangbusters! So, clearly, I’m sometimes wrong.

WWE gets new Mattel figures on January 01, 2010, and a comic series from Titan on March 23, 2010. It’ll be an interesting decade, that’s for sure.
